TOOTING

Multi-cultural and eclectic, Tooting is

one of the borough’s busiest town

centres. Often referred to as the

“new Shoreditch”, this is where artisan

brunch spots meet authentic curry

houses; where new cocktail bars stand

alongside sari shops and high-street

chains such as Primark and TK Maxx.

The town is fast becoming a foodie’s

paradise, boasting culinary delights

such as Lahore Karahi Chutney,

the Chicken Shop (owned by the

entrepreneur behind Soho House)

and the award-winning, antipodean-

style cafe MUD. The annual “Tootopia”

– a three-day festival celebrating

Tooting’s diverse food, drink and live

entertainment scene - is described by

Time Out as “one of London’s top three

annual foodie festivals”.

Tooting is also home to St George’s

University Hospital and Medical School,

South Thames College, two indoor markets

– Broadway Market and Tooting Market,

Tooting Common and the famous Lido,

the largest, fresh water

open- air swimming pool in

the United Kingdom, which

opened to the public in 1906.

Social enterprise is active

here too, with intiatives such

as Be Enriched, which hosts

free weekly community

meals. The charity partners

with local retailers to use

surplus food that would

have otherwise gone to

waste. It is estimated that

almost 40,000 people pass

through Tooting Broadway

station every day.

In 2017 it was named “Best Small Indoor Market in the UK” by the National Association

of British Market Authorities (NABMA), and in 2016 was crowned Business of the

Year at the Wandsworth Business Awards. The market hosts a diverse food court and

a variety of tenants selling everything from fresh produce and fabrics to crafts, art and

vintage clothes and furniture. Recent additions to the market include: We Brought

Beer; Franco Manca; the Brickwood Café; and Unwined.
