Putney is a cosmopolitan and historic
riverside town. It has a population
of around 135,000, drawing both
professionals and young families.
Since the second half of the 19th century,
Putney has been one of the most
significant centres for rowing in the UK,
and is home to more than 20 rowing
clubs based on the River Thames at
Putney Embankment. Each year, more
than 250,000 spectators gather here to
watch the start of the annual Oxford and
Cambridge Boat Race, which has had
Putney as its starting point since 1845.
Putney’s bustling commercial centre
is anchored by the Exchange Shopping
Centre, which is home to more than
40 shops, whilst the high street
features a mix of national chains and
independents stores.
The area offers some of the best
transport links in South West London;
it has a mainline station served by South
West Trains, two underground stations
(Putney Bridge and East Putney),
15 different bus routes plus a River
Bus from Putney Pier to Blackfriars
Millennium Pier.
In April 2017, Putney became a “Business
Improvement District”, which will help
to grow the town’s reputation as a
welcoming and accessible place to shop,
visit, work and do business, and is
expected to bring in more than £1m
investment over the next five years.
