THE YOUNG ENTERPRISE

COMPANIES PROGRAMME

The Young Enterprise Company

Programme has been running in

Wandsworth for more than ten years,

and there are currently seven schools

across the borough involved.

The initiative challenges students aged

15-19 to run their own real business

for an academic year, producing and

marketing a product or service to sell to

the public. The students are given shares

to sell; an HSBC Business Bank Account;

and access to a number of online

resources. In the spring the companies

can participate in the YE Company of the

Year Awards, starting at a borough level

and culminating in the UK Final in July.

Students are supported by a local

volunteer Business Adviser, who attends

meetings at the school every fortnight to

guide the students on their journey. Advisers

do not have to be business owners (although

this of course can help) – what matters

is commitment to the programme and

an enthusiasm for supporting the next

generation of entrepreneur.
